Should my clinic phone number be tap-to-call?

Yes. On a phone, a tap-to-call number lets a patient call you in one touch. A number shown as plain text or in an image forces them to remember it, copy it or switch apps, and some will give up. Setting it up is a small change that takes a few minutes.

  • Numbers you can check

What tap-to-call is

A tap-to-call number is a link that starts a phone call when tapped. In the code, it is a link beginning with “tel:” followed by the number, with the full number in international format (tel:+1 and then the ten digits). The text on the page can look like any other number.

Where it matters

  • The header, so it is visible on every page.
  • The first screen of the homepage, beside your Book online button.
  • The footer, with your address and hours.
  • The contact page.
  • Your online profile, which already offers a call button when your number is entered.

How to set it up

  1. Website builders. Many have a phone or link option in the button settings. Choose “phone number” and enter the number.
  2. WordPress. Add the number as a link in your header and footer menus, or ask your developer to use a “tel:” link.
  3. Use the full number, including the area code, with no spaces or brackets in the link itself.
  4. Test it on your phone. Tap the number and check that it starts a call to the right line.
  5. Avoid images of text. A number in a photo or banner can’t be tapped, searched or read by a screen reader.

Also say when you answer

A tap-to-call number is only helpful if someone picks up. Say your hours beside it, and have a backup for missed calls. See how to stop missing calls and how call tracking works.

Not sure where your clinic stands? We’ll look at it the way a new patient does and send a short written report. No pitch.

Questions owners ask

Does tap-to-call work on a computer?

It depends on the device. On a desktop it may open a calling app or do nothing, so keep the number visible as text as well.

Should I use a tracking number?

Only if you set it up properly and keep your main number consistent on Google and across the web. See call tracking.

Should the phone number be the only way to contact me?

No. Some people won’t call. See contact form or phone number.
